Federal Funds To Help Pay For Sandy Repairs In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Nearly $32 million in grants have been awarded to projects statewide for to communities affected by Hurricane Sandy, including projects in Fairfield, Norwalk and Stamford, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Tuesday.

Grant money will go to projects that will improve multifamily housing, infrastructure and public facilities. The projects and allocated funds for Fairfield County are as follows:

Fairfield:

Penfield Pavilion repairs - $500,000
Pine Creek Culvert upgrades - $560,000
Water Pollution Control Facility outfall pipe - $74,500

Norwalk:

Housing Authority, Washington Village Phase 1 - $9,855,596

Stamford:

Housing Authority, Summer Place - $6.4 million

“Given that extreme weather events like Sandy that were considered once in a century events have now become annual occurrences, it’s not a matter of if, but when that next storm will hit Connecticut’s shoreline communities,” Malloy said in a statement. “With these grants, we are not only helping these communities overcome the devastating impacts of one of the most severe storms in Connecticut’s history, but we’re also helping them to establish resiliency plans so they can be better prepared for future storms.”

Last year, the state was awarded $71.8 million through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program. The CDBG-DR funding was distributed by the state Department of Housing to help the most impacted and distressed areas recover from Sandy.
