FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Bigelow Center for Senior Activities in Fairfield is beginning the process of pursuing national accreditation through the National Council on Aging's (NCOA) National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC).

The accreditation process will help the Center improve the quality of services it provide its seniors, their families and caregivers in the community.

The accreditation process will help the Center improve the quality of services it provide its seniors, their families and caregivers in the community.

Accreditation will demonstrate the Center's full compliance with the highest national standards for senior center practices and complement the community’s standards of excellence.

The Center is currently in the early stages of accreditation. Over the next seven to 10 months, it will complete a self-assessment process. It is gathering a committee of community leaders, service providers, Center members and programming partners to assist in this process by providing input to be sure the Center is meeting the nine standards of excellence set by the NISC.

The Center will hold two community meetings this winter seeking feedback about its existing services and activities, as well as developing ideas and taking suggestions for future programming.

The first meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. at the Center on 100 Mona Terrace, Fairfield; the second meeting is scheduled at the Fairfield Woods Branch Library, on Fairfield Woods Road, on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m.

Accreditation is the official recognition of a Senior Center that is performing its mission in a nationally accepted, thoroughly professional manner. It is based on full compliance with the stringent standards of senior center operations developed by NISC.

Accreditation is granted for a five-year period. It holds substantial value for a senior center as it results in national recognition, provides a written strategic plan, assists in determining outcome measurements and heightens awareness of senior center activities to funders, community leaders, members and their families.
