Fairfielder Charged With Break-in at Own Business

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The owner of a hookah lounge recently shut down by Fairfield authorities was charged with breaking into his business Wednesday. Jaled Mayki Gorra, 41, of Grasmere Avenue, smashed open the glass front door of Casablanca, located on the Post Road, police say.

The business was closed by the Fairfield Fire Marshal’s office on Monday due to blocked egress, electrical issues and other fire code violations. Fairfield Police say they have responded to 34 calls at the lounge over the past year, for incidents including assaults, underage drinking and narcotics violations.

The owner of a separate business in the same building called police at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to report that Gorra was attempting to break open the glass front door of Casablanca. The owner of the building, located at 86 Post Road, told police Gorra was not supposed to be in the space after Monday.

Fairfield’s K-9 unit arrived at the scene and found broken glass, along with a blunt object apparently used in the break-in. Gorra was inside, intoxicated, and told officers he needed to get inside to get his medication, police say.

Gorra was charged with disorderly conduct and is due in court on Jan. 23. He was released on a promise to appear in court, but turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further processing.
