FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield might lose one of its oldest residents in just a few weeks. Tree Warden Ken Placko said Friday the town plans to cull a large sugar maple standing on Sherman Green in Fairfields town center.
Placko explained in a press release that he tree shows signs of root and trunk damage, along with other signs of wear. The Department of Public Works is scheduled to cut down the tree over the next few weeks. Portions of the Green (at the corner of Reef Road and the Post Road) would be closed for three days during the operation.
But Fairfield residents can still save the tree if they wish. Placko will accept letters and emails from residents explaining why they think the tree should remain. Fairfielders can send their arguments to kplacko@town.fairfield.ct.us or write to Ken Placko, One Rod Highway, Fairfield, CT 06824. Letters should include a phone number for Placko to contact.
Placko said he will explain to each complainant his reasons for culling the tree. If they are still not satisfied, a public hearing might take place for residents to air their concerns. If no one sends in a formal complaint before July 2, the removal will go through automatically.
