Fairfield U President Von Arx Attending Pope's Speech As Himes' Guest

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Thanks to his congressman, the president of Fairfield University will be in the audience when Pope Francis, a fellow Jesuit priest, speaks to a joint session of Congress next week during his first U.S. visit.

The Rev. Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., will be the guest of U.S. Rep. Jim Himes when Pope Francis addresses Congress on Sept. 24.

“I’ve worked with the Rev. von Arx for many years. His important role as a leader in both the educational and religious communities in the 4th District, and the fact that he began his academic career teaching at Georgetown, made him a natural choice for this visit," Himes said. 

"I’m greatly looking forward to the event and am eager to continue working with the Rev. von Arx, Fairfield University, and the members of the Catholic community to further improve southern Connecticut.”

Von Arx said he is excited for the trip to Washington, D.C.

“I’m thrilled to be able to hear Pope Francis’ address to Congress, and grateful to Congressman Himes for inviting me,” said von Arx. “The fact that the Pope is a fellow Jesuit makes the occasion all the more special for me. 

"I’m sure the Pope will have a message for the American people through their elected representatives that will be both challenging and inspirational, and I know that Congressman Himes looks forward to hearing that message as much as I do.”

The pope is due to arrive in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and meets with President Barack Obama on Wednesday, Sept. 23, take part in a Papal Parade along the Ellipse and the National Mall and celebrate of Mass of Canonization of Junipero Serra in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, is his address to the joint meeting of Congress. Pope Francis is due to fly to New York City in late afternoon and attend Evening Prayer (Vespers) at St. Patrick's Cathedral. 

On Friday, Sept. 25, he will address the United Nations General Assembly, attend a multi-religious service at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, take part in a procession through Central Park and celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, the pope heads to Philadelphia for a Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul and a visit to Independence Mall. 

On Sunday, Sept. 27, Pope Francis will celebrate a Mass for the conclusion of the World Meeting of Families on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway before departing for Rome.
