Fairfield Teen Tasered During Police Chase

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A 17-year-old Fairfield boy was Tasered by police Saturday night during an arrest on Fairfield Woods Road. Officers were pursuing the teen as a burglary suspect, but now believe he was just a trespasser in the backyard of a Fairfield home.

A Lisbon Drive resident called police at 11:50 p.m. Saturday night to report that he spotted a white male in his backyard whom he believed to be a burglar, according to police reports. The homeowner chased the suspect to Beverly Lane, where he held him briefly. The teenager broke free and continued running to Fairfield Woods Road, where he ran into Fairfield Police officers.

The suspect led officers on a brief foot chase, according to the police report. After telling him to stop, the officer fired a Taser at the teen to end the chase.

The boy was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for evaluation, and released that night into police custody. A Fairfield officer was treated for an ankle injury sustained during the pursuit.

Police found no evidence that the boy was on the caller’s property to commit a theft. Deputy Chief Christopher Lyddy said Monday that “the most likely scenario” was that the teen was taking a shortcut through backyards on his way home.

He was charged with simple trespass and interfering with police Saturday. He was released on a $1,000 bond and is due in juvenile court on April 26.
