FAIRFIELD, Conn. Counterfeit $100 bills made their way to two more downtown Fairfield businesses this week, according to police reports. The latest incidents, at the Fairfield University Bookstore and Liquid Lunch, bring the total of businesses hit by the fake bills in the past month to five.
Like in previous cases, the suspects at the Fairfield University Bookstore on Wednesday morning paid for a small number of items with a fake $100 bill and received real cash as change. Store employees reported two such transactions over the past week.
On Thursday, witnesses said a white female in her 30s tried to pay for her meal at Liquid Lunch on the Post Road with a $100 bill. The employee knew immediately that it was fake, because it had a portrait of Abraham Lincoln in the bottom right corner. The suspect left before police were contacted.
Fake $100 bills were used at Archie Moores Restaurant and Sweet Rexies candy store earlier this week, police say. Counterfeits were also reported at 16 Handles in December. Though descriptions of the suspects have been different in each incident, police say they believe the cases are connected to the same operation.
They advise employees who suspect they are receiving a counterfeit bill to call police immediately and to keep the suspects in the store if possible. Anyone with information can contact the police at 203-254-4800.
