Fairfield Store Worker Charged with Return Scam

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A manager at a Fairfield store was charged with stealing money from his employer through a return scam Tuesday. Michael Schouten, 34, took $520 in cash from the Radio Shack on Black Rock Turnpike, police say.

The loss prevention manager from the store contacted Fairfield police in November to report that an employee had been returning items under false customer names and pocketing the cash. Schouten’s employee identification was used on six transactions, totaling $520, according to the police report. When confronted by the security manager, Schouten admitted to keeping the cash, police say.

Schouten turned himself in to Fairfield Police Tuesday afternoon after learning of a warrant for his arrest. He was charged with fifth-degree larceny and third-degree forgery. He was released on a $5,000 bond, and is due in court on Jan. 26.
