Singer-songwriter Kristen Graves, Connecticut’s state troubadour, has a deal for you: She’s looking for stars for a video for her new song “Swing.”
“The concept is simple. I want people to share stories of how you met someone you love,” said the Fairfield resident. “This can be romantic love, family love, best friend love, or rescue pet love. The world just needs more love, and we're going to give it to them!”
Those interested may send a video or photo explaining how they met their special someone to kristen@kristengraves.com. Graves will edit the materials and create a special Valentine video.
Here is a video with an example of what she is envisioning.
“The idea is to share and spread as much love around as possible,” Graves said.
The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, Feb. 9.
The Wisconsin native became state troubadour — Connecticut’s honorary ambassador of music and song — in 2013 and will end her reign in March.
Graves began her musical career studying classical piano and says she had her epiphany during the rise of Lillith Fair concert tours, which featured singer-songwriters such as Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin and Jewel.
Her mother asked her piano teacher to let her work on her own music during lessons and a passion for singing and songwriting emerged.
Recording since 2000, Graves has added her powerful, crystalline voice to six albums and two EPs. She tours constantly, often logging 200 appearances a year, having shared the stage with folk stars Rusted Root, Dar Williams, Peter Yarrow and the late Pete Seeger.
In October, she completed her first European tour of France, Spain and Germany.
In her spare time she works on her “faux political party.”
“I call it the Just Be Nice,” she said, of her efforts to spread kindness among others. “Just be nice. I think that’s a good way to be.
“This way I’m of no interest to the special interests.”
