Snow plow crews worked throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning, and most roads in Fairfield are now safe for driving. But the holiday weekend took its toll on Fairfields drivers. While Fairfield police reported at least eight motor vehicle accidents and several assist calls for drivers stuck in the snow over Sunday night and Monday morning, the roads were perilous for drivers even before the snow started falling. From the police blotter:
? On Thursday, at approximately 4:38 p.m., a car struck a pedestrian as she crossed Villa Avenue near Tunxis Hill Road. Police say the woman was wearing dark clothing, and did not cross at the marked crosswalk nearby. The driver stopped immediately to help the woman. She was taken to St. Vincents Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
? Later Thursday night, a Fairfield man was charged with drunken driving following a minor collision. A witness saw Jon Damon, 46, hit the curb on Burroughs Road, swerve back into the street and continue driving, despite losing a hubcap.
When Fairfield Police caught up with Damon on Fairfield Woods Road, the officer noticed a distinct odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Damon slurred his speech while talking with officers, and failed a field sobriety test. He was arrested for driving under the influence, evading responsibility and failure to drive right. He was released on a $100 bond and is due in court Jan. 3.
? Another Fairfield man was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol at a DUI checkpoint Friday night. Brian Allen, 18, approached the checkpoint just before 11 p.m. Friday. The arresting officer smelled the odor of burnt marijuana and noticed that Allen had pinpoint pupils and slurred speech. Allen also could not follow the officers instructions to put his vehicle in park.
Allen admitted that he smoked marijuana before driving, and was charged with operating under the influence. He was released on a $100 bond and is due in court Jan. 4.
