Fairfield Man Charged with Identity Theft

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Fairfield man was charged with identity theft and other charges last week. Kevin Kernan, 23, of Bullard Street was accused of using his employer’s debit card to make more than $1,000 in withdrawals.

The owner of a Pemburn Drive business called to report thefts from his business bank account in January. The victim told police that ATM withdrawals were being made with a card that had been lost, but not cancelled, earlier that month. Five unauthorized transactions totaling $1,022 were made at ATMs in Fairfield and Bridgeport.

A suspect was spotted on video surveillance cameras at the ATMs where the withdrawals were made. The victim identified Kernan as the man in the videos, and police filed for a warrant in February. Kernan was arrested Friday afternoon.

Kernan was charged with fourth-degree larceny, fraudulent use of an ATM, illegal use of a credit card and third-degree identity theft. He was released on a promise to appear in court April 30.
