Fairfield Leaders Give To The Troops

Fairfield Representative Town Meeting members Alexis Harrison and David Becker are hard at work packing socks and other basic items for soldiers in Afghanistan. But the two are reminding Fairfielders that there is still time to make donations to SoldierSocks' holiday drive.

"I am pleased to be involved with SoldierSocks as it is another example of how Americans can show our troops that we are thinking of them and have immense gratitude for their service and sacrifices," said Becker.

Stamford's Chris Meek started the organization last year, after learning that many soldiers serving overseas are running short of basic necessities. SoldierSocks.com collects socks, toiletries and other basic necessities and sends them to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The group's holiday drive runs throughout December. Fairfield and Southport residents can take donations to Henry C. Reid & Son Jewelers at 1591 Post Road, Capitol Photo Interactive at 1139 Post Road, the Fairfield Arts Council at 70 Sanford St., the Russell Agency at 317 Pequot Ave. and the Southport Volunteer Fire Department at 69 Main St. Volunteers will also collect donations at Southport Village's annual Christmas Walk and visit with Santa from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Dec. 9 in Southport Center.

"SoldierSocks is such a worthy cause because it directly helps our servicemen and women who give the ultimate sacrifice to our country, and I think it's an opportunity to show our appreciation for their service," Harrison said in a statement. "Our community always comes together for causes and to help those in need, and I hope individuals will consider donating tube socks and baby wipes for our soldiers during the holiday season."
