Dan Caruso, Fairfield's probate judge honored veterans by making reference to Nov. 11, the official holiday. "World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month," he said. "It was the first time we sent troops overseas to defend our freedom. We continue to honor those who sacrifice and serve us far away."
Ron Orszag, a Fairfield veteran who served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, said, "Nobody appreciated us in the '60s and '70s but since Iraq and Afghanistan things have changed. The holiday is also dedicated to those serving now."
Robert Korchman, of Fairfield, who was a U.S. Marine paratrooper in Korea from 1952-55 said he dedicated three years of his life to the war effort and is grateful for the town's recognition.
"I'm glad to see everyone come out now," he said. "They approve of what we did. All towns should do it."
After the ceremony, there was a reception inside the Old Academy, hosted by the Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
