Fairfield Honors Lost Soldiers In Memorial Day Ceremony

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- More than two dozen Fairfield County veterans, boys scouts and active duty soldiers did not let pouring rain, howling wind and unseasonably cold temperatures deter them from honoring those who gave their lives for their country in a memorial ceremony on Saturday morning.

Captain Roger Crossland, U.S. Navy (Ret.) led, as he called, "a field expedient" ceremony at South Benson Marina in which he recognized local veterans and their comrades from all American armed conflicts since World War II.

"We know here in Fairfield that honor and respect isn't just a sunny day thing," Crossland said. "We are grateful for you attendance, especially under these conditions."

Members of several local VFW's read the names of veterans who have passed away in the last year.

Fairfield Boy Scouts set up tent for the veterans and held them down so the fierce wind would not blow them away.
