Fairfield Fire Chief Offers Holiday Safety Tips

Everyone gets in a festive mood this time of year, with light displays and Christmas trees adorning many homes for the holiday season. But Fire Chief Richard Felner reminds Fairfielders to make sure those decorations are safe. The chief issued a collection of tips Thursday for homeowners to avoid tragic accidents this Christmas.

"Over the years our department has responded to a number of fires in which carelessly decorated trees were the cause," Felner said. "No lives were lost in those fires, but some of the homes were damaged extensively."

One risk Felner warns of is natural trees. Nothing beats the smell of a fresh tree, but dried-out dead trees can easily catch fire. When you first bring the tree home, saw about an inch off the base of the trunk to create a "fresh cut" for water to seep into the stem. Keep the water line above the bottom of the stump, and water the tree each day. Remove the tree as soon as it shows signs of drying, such as excessive shedding of needles.

Once the tree is watered, make sure it is stable, using support wires if necessary. And keep it a safe distance from heaters and candles. "Never decorate your tree with candles," Felner said.

Electrical systems can also cause problems. Felner recommends checking all wires and cords before plugging them in and using power strips to prevent overloaded outlets. Also, turn off interior lights before leaving the house or going to sleep.

"We hope everyone in Fairfield and throughout Connecticut will take these simple precautions," said Felner. "And on behalf of the entire Fairfield Fire Department wish our community a safe and happy holiday season!" Questions regarding fire and light safety in the home may be directed to the fire marshal's office at 203-254-4720.
