FAIRFIELD, Conn. To help our readers prepare for Election Day, The Daily Fairfield sent five questions to each of the candidates on the November ballot. The following response is from Greg Alprin, a Democrat running for the Representative Town Meeting in District 9.
Why should people vote for you?
As a nine-year resident of Fairfield, deciding to settle here is one of the best decisions my wife and I have ever made. The diversity of the town, great schools with dedicated educators, affordability of home ownership compared to some of our local neighbors and lower taxes compared to our border neighbors are all issues I am dedicated to trying to preserve that are essential to keeping Fairfield one of New Englands best towns.
What are the biggest issues facing Fairfield?
Responsibility, Accountability and Productivity. Now more than ever the town budget is the issue I feel needs the most discussion.
Is Fairfield going in the right direction If you are an incumbent, what were your biggest achievements? If you are a challenger, what has your opponent done wrong while in office?
The theme I consistently have heard are that in many cases the incumbents are voting with only a small group of people in mind, and not for the overall best interests of the town. I feel that regardless of the issues, if that is the ideology elected officials are going to have, we are setting ourselves up for failure and it is not an ideology I share. If elected I will certainly vote and support the issues in the best interest of the town, even If I personally may have a different opinion.
What would you do to involve your constituents in your decision-making process?
In the new world of social nedia and electronic communication it is easier than ever to reach people. Personal blogs, Websites, Facebook and Twitter pages are all non-intrusive ways for constituents to get targeted with specific information to read at their leisure. I have both Facebook and Twitter pages and will make regular updates on issues, events and projects going on in town and will always welcome comments, feedback and emails. I will not be afraid to answer the tough questions from any of our neighbors.
How can Fairfield avoid another Metro Center, i.e., a project that goes severely over budget? What will you do to prevent it? Be specific.
I think there needs to be more transparency in the process, and RTM members must take their role as the last line of defense very seriously. I know I will ask a lot of questions and seek regular updates on progress and finances for all projects as they progress.
