Dozens of workers at a Fairfield factory fled their jobs Tuesday night as a fire ripped through the Lacey Place building. Fairfield Fire Department crews spent nearly two hours putting out flames at Superior Plating Co. in Southport.
This fire presented some significant challenges to firefighters due to the electrical and chemical hazards present in the building and the heavy smoke conditions making visibility difficult for firefighters, said incident commander Assistant Chief Scott Bisson. We were very fortunate that we were able to quickly control the fire before it could extend to the chemical processes in the main operating areas of the factory.
The first call for the fire came in to the Fire Department at 7:20 p.m. When the first crews arrived, employees told firefighters that they had controlled a small cardboard fire in the rear of the building. But when firefighters entered the factory, they saw a larger fire spreading to the roof. Firefighters were able to control the blaze while searching for people stuck inside the building, but all of the 30 or 40 employees had made it out safely.
No employees were harmed in the fire, and firefighters said the building would be safe for workers to return. The total cost of the damage was not immediately clear.
