Eight Cars Broken Into in Fairfield

Fairfield Police are investigating a string of car break-ins that occurred Thursday evening and early Friday morning. Thieves struck at eight cars in three clusters, in many cases smashing windows to gain entry.

The first group of break-ins hit the town center area Thursday evening. At about 6:45 p.m., a Fairfield resident reported that the passenger side window of his car was broken while it was parked behind the School of Rock at 1976 Post Road. Nothing was missing, but the damage to the vehicle is estimated at $300. Minutes later, a commuter at the lot on Mill Plain Road told police his car was broken into between 7:15 a.m. and 6:50 p.m. The thief smashed the passenger window and took a $300 GPS system.

The second pair of burglaries occurred near the Edge Fitness Center on Kings Highway. Thieves broke into a  car parked on Meadow Street between 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. They broke the passenger window and took a black purse containing an unknown amount of cash and credit cards. A second car was hit in the same lot between 5:50 and 7:15 p.m., with the same m.o. -- a broken window and missing purse, in this case a $300 black leather bag with two wallets containing $30.

The owners of the last four cars all left their vehicles unlocked in their driveways. The first incident was on Pierce Street, where a bag containing $160 in electronics was taken from the vehicle sometime overnight between Thursday and Friday. The thieves made away with a $100 GPS system, a $30 cell phone charger and a $30 iPod cradle.

Also overnight, two cars parked were hit in a driveway on Villa Avenue. The homeowners came out Friday morning to discover the doors open. A purse containing credit cards was taken from one, a $200 iPod from the other.

Finally, down the street, a homeowner found that a thief had snuck into his detached garage overnight. Though the car’s door was unlocked, the burglar used the homeowner’s tools to pry open the car door. The thief  took an ACER laptop valued at $100.

Anyone with information about these incidents should contact the Fairfield police. They recommend locking car doors, and hiding valuables or taking them with you when leaving a car unattended.
