Edward Bachman, a Fairfield resident for nearly 60 years, died March 17 at the age of 95. A funeral director by trade, Bachman loved the sea. He fished year-round and later took to walking on beaches, searching for buried treasure.
Bachman was born in Bridgeport on Dec. 18, 1915. After graduating from Central High School and the Bridgeport School of Embalming, he ran a funeral parlor in the city for 45 years before retiring in 1980. Bachman also served in World War II, fighting in the Pacific Theater as a pharmacist mate 2nd class in the U.S. Navy. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9427 and American Legion Post 74, both based in Fairfield.
He was an avid fisherman, spending time in both fresh and saltwater, but particularly enjoyed fishing out of Southport Harbor. He also loved boating, keeping a boat in Ye Yacht Yard in Southport Harbor and joining the Fairfield Boat Owners Association and serving on several Southport Harbor Commissions. In his later years, he stuck to the shore, frequently taking a metal detector down Fairfields beaches to look for lost coins.
Bachman was also a communicant at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and was a member of both the Fairfield Historical Society and the Mill Plain Improvement Society.
Bachman was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Josephine, and three brothers, William, Arthur and George Bachman. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Eleanor Angliss and husband Robert of Longmont, Colo.; Elizabeth Stockmal and husband Henry of Columbia, Jane Bachman and husband Robert Brzozowski of Oneonta, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, James Bachman and wife, Karen of West Hartford; and eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Bachman was buried Tuesday, March 21, at Oak Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Long Island Sound Fund, Office of Long Island Sound Programs, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, 79 Elm St., Hartford, CT 06106-5127, or to your local public library in memory of Edward J. Bachman.
