Drowning Woman Rescued Along Fairfield's Shore

UPDATE, 4:30 p.m.: Fairfield Police released the name of the victim in Wednesday's near-drowning: Emma Shtypel of Norman Street in Bridgeport. She is still in critical condition.

 

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— A Bridgeport woman is in serious condition after nearly drowning in the waters off Jennings Beach Wednesday morning. The 77-year-old is alive and receiving treatment at Bridgeport Hospital as of 10 a.m.

Residents on the shore told Fairfield Police they saw the woman go under water suddenly as she was swimming at about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday. The witnesses called nearby Department of Public Works crews, who helped pull her ashore. A registered nurse who happened to be on the beach began CPR until members of the Fairfield Police arrived. The woman was still alive as American Medical Response took her to the hospital.
