Driver Charged With DUI After Hitting Restaurant

An motorist was charged with driving under the influence Monday after she allegedly ran a light on the Post Road in Fairfield, hit another car and crashed into Kiraku restaurant.

Yamina Berrabeh, 30, of Norwalk, was traveling west on the Post Road when she failed to stop for a red light at the intersection with Mill Plain Road, police said. She struck a car turning from Mill Plain, continued onto the eastbound side of the street and hit the wall of the Japanese restaurant at the corner. The structure of the building was not severely damaged.

While tending to Berrabeh, Fairfield Police smelled a strong odor of alcohol. They issued a field sobriety test, which she passed. When they brought her in for a breathalyzer test, she refused. Berrabeh admitted to police that she ran a red light, but denied being drunk at the time of the accident. Police issued a misdemeanor summons for driving under the influence. She was released on a $500 bond, and is due in court March 8.
