Dog Rescued from Fairfield House Fire

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A basement fire filled a Fairfield home with smoke Sunday afternoon. No people were inside during the incident, but Fairfield Fire Department crews pulled a dog from the blaze during their response.

The fire occurred at a Shiller Road house at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday. Neighbors called to report smoke was coming from the rear of the house and it “smelled like wood.” Fairfield Fire Department crews found the fire started in the basement and was spreading to the first floor of the home.

Believing people were inside, fire crews went in to look for victims. The residents, a young couple, were not home, but their small dog was found in the house and pulled outside by firefighter Brian Madia.

“If the fire had not been reported quickly by an observant neighbor, the outcome would have been very different, especially for the family pet,” said Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola, the incident commander.

Fairfield firefighters managed to put out the fire within about two hours. Fire Marshal Bill Kessler still is investigating the cause of the fire.
