Disruption At Temple, Highly Ranked Schools Top Week's News In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Here's a look at the top stories from last week across Fairfield County.

  • The president of Temple Israel in Westport called it extremely disturbing but said "fortunately, no one was in danger" when two unarmed men attempted to disrupt a luncheon Tuesday for Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. Westport police arrested Daniel Fischer, 25, and Gregory Williams, 25, both of New Haven. Each was charged with first-degree criminal trespass and second-degree breach of peace. During the disturbance, Coleytown Middle School, Coleytown Elementary School, the preschool at the Unitarian Church and the Temple Israel nursery were put into lockdown.
  • Gina Levon Simpson of Bridgeport is devoted to helping children become leaders in her job as the  lead teacher for the Bridgeport branch of the Children's Leadership Training Institute. 
  • Several Fairfield County high schools were ranked among the best in Connecticut by U.S. News & World Report, including Weston High at No. 5, Staples at No. 7, Darien at No. 8, Wilton at No. 9, Ridgefield at No. 11, Joel Barlow at No. 13, Greenwich at No. 14, New Canaan at No. 15, Fairfield Ludlowe at No. 24, at Fairfield Warde at No. 30, Westhill at No. 32, Brien McMahon at No. 41 and the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering in Stamford at No. 43. 
  • Marcio DaSilva, a 58-year-old Danbury resident, was hit and killed by a garbage truck in an accident at the Winter Bros. transfer station. The driver of the All American Waste garbage truck was Sylvie Dzamko, 46, of Danbury, police said.  
  • Stamford Assistant Police Chief Timothy Shaw will be trading his beat in a big city for more rural surroundings when he becomes chief of the Easton Police Department in July. 
  • A new National Park Service report shows that a record 34,083 people visited Weir Farm National Historic Site in Ridgefield and Wilton in 2014. Those visitors spent $1.9 million in communities near the park, which supported 23 jobs in the area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $2.6 million.
  • Nine fourth-graders from Fairfield’s North Stratfield Elementary School are competing in the National School Scrabble Championships.
