The grants are designed to advance urban forestry in Connecticut. Urban forestry is the management of trees that grow in close proximity to people – trees where people live, work and play.

“Urban forestry is all about planning for the future – it is gesture of true optimism. The work done this year, through these grants, will sustain for years and even generations to come,” said Chris Martin, DEEP’s director of forestry. “What is great about these grants is that the work is being done at the local level, by people who care deeply about the city or town where they live. DEEP is there to help, but the people are there to get things done.”

Towns receiving grants include:

  • Town of Brookfield: “Still River Greenway Enhancement Project,” $3,495
  • Oaklawn Cemetery Association (Fairfield): “Oak Lawn Cemetery and Arboretum Management of Urban Forests Woodlands Plan,” $6,752.50
  • Town of Fairfield: “Interpretive Signage Project,” $4,300
  • Town of Stratford: “Greening More from Forest to Shore,” $3,000
  • Town of Westport: “The Lillian Wadsworth Arboretum Project - Phase II,” $10,900

Communities are encouraged to undertake projects that improve the health and condition of the urban forest, through tree plantings, tree maintenance projects or invasive species removal, and also lead to greater awareness of the importance that trees play in lives of the state’s citizens.

Money for the grants is through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a multi-state effort to reduce carbon emissions from power plants.
