Damaging Storm Keeps Fire Dept. Busy

The microburst storm that tore through Fairfield County on Thursday afternoon kept the Fairfield Fire Department on its toes, as 40 emergency calls came in after the 2 p.m. storm, according to Fire Chief Richard Felner. The fire department also responded to multiple calls in Bridgeport, including a building collapse on Cannon Street, as part of the town's mutual aid agreement with its neighboring city.

“We were ready to assist Bridgeport when they called for mutual aid in responding to the devastation that struck our neighboring community, while at the same our fire fighters did a great job in protecting the citizens of Fairfield," Felner said.

The storm knocked out power to over 10 percent of the towns United Illuminating customers. As of noon on Friday, 1,120 customers remained without power.

Many of the calls the fire department responded to were to clear wires and trees that fell at homes around town, according to Assistant Chief Chris Tracy.
