Cyclist, 68, Hit by Truck in Fairfield Dies

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? A 68-year-old Fairfield woman died early Wednesday morning from injuries received when she was hit by a truck earlier this week. Elizabeth Lucas of Fairfield Beach Road had been in serious condition since Monday afternoon.

Lucas was riding her bicycle through the intersection of Paulding Street and Rowland Road at about 3:30 p.m. Monday when a truck passing through the intersection struck her. Emergency responders found her motionless on the ground with an apparent head injury and external bleeding. She was taken to Bridgeport Hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

Investigators took the driver to police headquarters for tests after the collision. They found that he was not impaired and no charges have been brought against the driver. However, the accident is still under investigation.

Police ask residents to be careful of pedestrians and cyclists along Fairfield’s roads. They also remind bike riders to wear helmets. “Although the summer season is winding down, we will continue to see an increase in foot traffic due to the opening of schools and the return of several thousand college students to the area,” Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said in a statement.
