An 86-year-old Fairfield woman was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital Monday morning after an accident on the Post Road ended with her car sitting on its roof on the lawn of Chase Bank. Police say the woman was conscious, but had injuries to her arm and legs.
The woman, a Post Road resident, was attempting to make a right turn into the banks parking lot at the entrance just before the intersection with Old Post Road at about 11:30 a.m. Monday. Accident investigators believe the woman hit her gas pedal instead of her brake, causing the car to speed forward and flip over. A preliminary investigation found no mechanical problems with the car prior to the incident.
Fairfield Fire Department crews used extrication tools to pull the woman out of the wreckage. They said she was conscious after the crash but had a broken right arm and leg injuries. The full extent of her injuries were unknown. Paramedics took the driver to St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport for treatment.
The impact knocked over Chases lawn sign, but the car did not collide with the building itself. One lane of the eastbound side of the Post Road was closed for at least two hours while tow trucks, fire department crews and police officers removed the car from the banks front lawn.
