A car crash on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield Wednesday morning sent both drivers to the hospital with injuries. The accident blocked traffic on the major road for about one hour while the Fairfield Fire and Police Departments cleared the wreckage and tended to the injured.
Just before 8 a.m., a 46-year-old Newtown man in a 2007 Hummer H3 ran a red light going south on Black Rock Turnpike. He struck a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee crossing the road heading east on Burroughs Road. The driver of the Jeep, a 59-year-old Greenwich woman, was pinned inside her car by the impact.
Fairfield firefighters freed the woman using the jaws of life to remove her cars door and support frame. American Medical Response took her to St. Vincents Hospital for leg pain.
Fairfield Police issued an infraction to the Newtown man for running the red light. He was also taken to St. Vincents for medical treatment.
Fairfield Police say the injuries for both drivers were not life-threatening. Fairfield Police and Fire crews stayed on the scene until both vehicles were removed just before 9 a.m.
