The scammers tell residents that they are getting error messages from the consumer's computer and want to walk them through how to fix the problem. The Department of Consumer Protection advises that if you're unaware of problems with your computer, don't fall for this. It is most likely a scam.

What is really happening is the scammers will guide residents to install a program that could compromise their personal information. The department said it has even heard reports of consumers who don't even have a computer getting these calls.
