Malloy's statement reaffirms President Barack Obama's directive to lower flags across the nation after the country's deadliest mass shooting since the assault on Sandy Hook Elementary School. In December 2012, 20 children and six educators were shot to death in the Newtown school.
In San Bernardino, 14 people were killed and more than 20 injured when a couple opened fire Wednesday inside the Inland Regional Center, a social services center for people with developmental disabilities.
Malloy issued a statement Wednesday evening in the wake of the massacre. "This is yet another heartbreaking situation, and yet another day during which families are holding their breath hoping – and praying – that their loved ones are coming home," said Malloy.
"And it’s our most vulnerable communities who are suffering today. Unnecessary gun violence is plaguing America, and we must step up and act to protect our neighbors, our families, and communities across the nation."
Malloy offered assistance and condolences to Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown. “We are mourning for the San Bernardino community, for the families who lost loved ones, and those with loved ones who’ve been victimized. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families on this day and the first responders and others who will be impacted by these events.”
