'Click It or Ticket' Returns to Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Police want to remind residents to get in the habit of bucking their seatbelts when driving — especially at night. Patrol officers will participate in the annual “Click it or Ticket” campaign from Nov. 14 to 27. Officers with a no-tolerance policy for seatbelt violations will issue more tickets.

“Many more nighttime traffic deaths can be prevented if more motorists simply start wearing their seat belts,” Sgt. Robert Kalamaras, of Fairfield’s Special Services Division, said in a press release. “We will be out in force to remind drivers and occupants to always wear their seat belts — both day and night.”

A total of 11,593 people died in the United States in motor vehicle accidents between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. in 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those, 62 percent were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

“If law enforcement finds you on the road unbuckled anytime or anywhere, you can expect to get a ticket — not a warning," Kalamaras said. “No excuses and no exceptions.”
