FAIRFIELD, Conn. A hazardous materials spill sent a Fairfield firefighter to the hospital early Wednesday morning. The firefighter was treated for possible exposure to chemical vapors, and returned to active duty Wednesday.
Fairfield Fire Department crews responded to an emergency call on Commerce Drive just after midnight Wednesday. They found what appeared to be smoke coming from Metal Specialties Inc., a metal treating company. Once inside, they discovered that there was no fire, and that the smoke came from a mixture of hazardous chemicals.
The Fairfield County Hazardous Materials Response team and officials from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection joined Fairfield police officers and firefighters at the scene. Commerce Drive was closed for several hours while they found and stabilized the spill. The last group of responders cleared the scene at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
