FAIRFIELD, ConnFairfield Police are investigating a car found mysteriously burnt in the parking lot of Dwight Elementary School. They found no evidence of a victim inside, but police still do not know how the car became completely incinerated overnight.
Police first found the car at about 8:10 a.m. Thursday. The vehicle was parked in the Redding Road schools rear lot, near a group of softball fields. The car was not aflame when they arrived, but it was entirely burned. There were no signs of a victim in the area.
A softball game took place on the field between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Wednesday night, and no reports came in then. A local resident did call police at about 11 p.m., describing two loud banging noises that sounded like gunshots. When officers arrived to inspect the scene, they did not find any signs of a burning car.
Officers did find five young men in a car in the schools lower lot when they went out to inspect the noises. An officer approached the group, he smelled the odor of burnt marijuana, and saw cigar wrappers in the vehicle. He asked the group if they had any drugs on them, and one turned over a metal grinder with residue inside.
Police issued an infraction to the 17-year-old Fairfield resident for possession of drug paraphernalia. They are still investigating possible causes for the burned vehicle.

? Peter Mendler, 58, of Naugatuck, was charged with theft after her was found with a stolen wallet during a traffic stop. A Fairfield resident called police Wednesday night to report that his wallet, containing credit cards and $500 cash, disappeared while he was at a restaurant that evening. Connecticut state police called Fairfield later in the night to report they found the wallet in Mendlers pocket while arresting him for driving under the influence on Route 8.
Fairfield Police charged Mendler with fifth-degree larceny. He was released on a promise to appear in court on September 6.
