Cancer Survivor, Climber To Talk in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Two-time cancer survivor and mountain climber Sean Swarner will be the featured guest in the next Connecticut Challenge speaker series Thursday, April 12, at Roger Ludlowe Middle School. The event begins at 7:30 p.m.

Swarner's talk is open to the public, but registration is required at www.ctchallenge.org/keepclimbing.

Swarner, who was named the 2007 Jimmy V Foundation's Don't Ever Give Up Award winner for his courage, will give an audiovisual presentation on his climb up 29,035-foot Mount Everest, in which he endured hurricane-force winds and crossed crevasses thousands of feet deep on rickety aluminum ladders. Swarner will also offer insights into the grueling journey of his youth and his two bouts with cancer.

A special reception and flag signing for cancer survivors will be held at 6:30 p.m. Swarner will carry the flag up Mount Kilimanjaro this July and plant it at the summit. Following the event, Swarner will sign copies of his book, "Keep Climbing." A limited quantity will be available for purchase, or you may bring your own copy for him to sign.

The Connecticut Challenge is a non-profit group, founded in 2005, that creates and supports unique survivorship programs and research to empower cancer survivors to live healthier, happier, longer lives. The annual CT Challenge Bike Ride is the group's primary fundraiser. It takes place this year on July 28 in Westport.
