Agostino Iannarone, 91, World War II Veteran

Agostino N. “Augie” Iannarone, a resident of Fairfield for the past 60 years, died Tuesday at the age of 91. Iannarone was an accomplished engineer, first with the Army in World War II and later at a series of local companies.

Iannarone was born Sept. 9, 1919, in Bridgeport. After graduating from Warren Harding High School, he enrolled at the Bridgeport Engineering Institute, later enlisting in the  Army during the war. He served as the crew chief for the an Army Air Corps B-17 bomber training squadron. After returning home, he worked in engineering for nearly 50 years at General Electric, Perkin Elmer and other local companies.

After retirement, Iannarone enjoyed spending time at the Fairfield Senior Center. He especially enjoyed playing table tennis, joining the Senior Center’s group and later medaling in the Connecticut Special Olympics. He also loved photography, especially taking pictures of his grandchildren.

Iannarone is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eleanore Coleandra Iannarone; two children, Dr. John P. Iannarone and his wife, Elaine, of Monroe, and Holly I. Flynn and her husband, James, of Fairfield; two sisters, Lucy Iannarone and Angie Iannarone of Fairfield; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Iannarone.

Calling hours are Thursday, June 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road. The home will also host a funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, followed by burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, 2nd Floor, Bethesda, MD 20814, or to the Autism Society of CT, 103 Talcott Road, Guilford, CT 06437.
