FAIRFIELD, Conn. This weekend marks the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day, and many groups around Fairfield are holding celebrations to get in the spirit. The weekend also features opportunities for kids to try their hands at being pilots, artists and princesses. Here are some of the events happening around Fairfield this weekend:
Friday, April 20
10 a.m.: The Fairfield Museum and History Center at 370 Beach Road wraps up its Spring Break programming with Up and Away. Kids will learn about the history of flight while playing with balloons and making balsa wood gilders. The program costs $20 for museum members, $25 for nonmembers.
11 a.m.: The Fairfield Public Librarys new childrens librarian, Mary Sorhus, will celebrate Earth Day a few days early. In a program for kids in grades 3 to 5, Miss Mary will read Earth Day stories while kids make crafts out of natural and recycled materials. The event is free at the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road.
8 p.m.: Sacred Heart Universitys Theater Arts students will put on a production of Spring Awakening. The performance of the Tony-winning musical will also take place Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $22 for the public, with discounts for seniors and students.
Saturday, April 21
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: The World Artists Network will be on Fairfields Sherman Green at Post Road and Reef Road for Artist for a Day. The program allows kids to experiment with a variety of art media, including acrylics, Suminagashi inks and scratchboard. The event is free, but donations are welcome.
Noon to 3 p.m.: Sacred Hearts Phi Sigma Sigma sorority wants Fairfields girls to feel like a Princess for a Day. The event on the University Commons at 5151 Park Ave. invites girls to dress up as princesses and meet the girls, dressed as Disney princesses, for photos, crafts and face painting. Admission is $12 per girl.
2 p.m.: Soh Daiko, a group based out of the New York Buddhist Church, will perform a traditional Japanese drum music show at Southports Trinity Episcopal Church at 651 Pequot Ave. The concert is part of the Pequot Librarys Music for Youth series and is free.
7 p.m.: The Bridgeport Sound Tigers started the American Hockey League playoffs this week. They take on in-state rival the Connecticut Whale in Game 2 of their opening series at the Webster Bank Arena. Tickets range from $20 to $60 at the arena website.
Sunday, April 22
8 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The monthly flea market at Fairfield Warde High School at 755 Melville Drive returns for the summer. Vendors will be there selling home goods, jewelry, antiques, dollar store items, fashion accessories, CDs, DVDs, sample clothing and other items. A portion of the proceeds will go to the high schools PTA.
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The Beardsley Zoo at 1875 Noble Ave., Bridgeport, will host Party for the Planet in honor of Earth Day. The Mudpuppies and the Environmental Hootenanny with Tom Calliman and Ann Shapiro will perform at the Peacock Pavilion. Eco-friendly vendors will show off some of the latest green products. Zoo admission is $12 for adults, $10 for kids and seniors.
9:30 a.m.: Runners will take to the streets in honor of the late Fairfield couple Tim and Kim Donnelly in the annual Donnelly Dash, starting at Tomlinson Middle School at 200 Unquowa Road. Proceeds from the 3.5-mile race will go toward upkeep for the Bridgeport park named after the Donnellys and local charities. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and costs $30 on race day.
