FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield is back to business after last weeks April vacation. A host of town meetings and the Republican presidential primary will keep the Town Hall area active. But the week also has its share of interesting talks and fun activities to keep Fairfielders entertained. Here are some of the events happening around Fairfield this week:
Monday, April 23
6:30 p.m.: Mona Garcia of Fairfield University starts a four-part series on women in the Civil War. The first session focuses on Varina Davis, first lady of the Confederacy. The lecture is free at the Fairfield Woods Branch Library, 1147 Fairfield Woods Road.
7:30 p.m.: Sacred Heart Universitys L.O.V.E., or Ladies Only Vocal Ensemble, will perform its annual Pops Concert at the schools Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts, 5151 Park Ave. Tickets are $5, or $3 for seniors and students.
8 p.m.: Stephen M. Coan, president and CEO of Sea Research Foundation, and Robert Ballard (via video), founder and president of the Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium, will present The Future of Our Oceans. The lecture is a part of the Open Visions forum series at the Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University, 1073 N. Benson Road. Tickets are $45 through the theater box office.
Tuesday, April 24
6 a.m. to 8 p.m.: Fairfields polling places will be open for the Republican presidential preference primary. Only Republican Party members registered to vote in Fairfield by Monday at noon will be allowed to vote.
4:30 p.m.: The Board of Selectmen will hold a special meeting on the first floor of Sullivan Independence Hall, 725 Old Post Road. The meetings agenda is available through the towns website.
7:30 p.m.: The Town Plan and Zoning Commission will hold its bimonthly meeting on the second floor of Sullivan Independence Hall, 725 Old Post Road. The meetings agenda is available here.
Wednesday, April 25
2 p.m.: Roseanne Bok, author of Horsekeeping, will talk about her memoir at the Fairfield Public Library. The lecture is free to attend in the Memorial Room of the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road.
4:30 p.m.: The Police Commission will hold a special meeting on the second floor of the Fairfield Police Headquarters, 100 Reef Road. The meetings agenda is available through the towns website.
7 p.m.: The Parks and Recreation Commission will hold its monthly meeting at the Postol Recreation Center, 75 Mill Plain Road. The meetings agenda is available here.
7:30 p.m.: Holocaust survivor Harry Weichsel of Bridgeport will be the featured speaker at Fairfields Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony. Weischel will tell his story at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road.
Thursday, April 26
6 to 9 p.m.: The McKinley Schools annual carnival starts in the parking lot of Jennings Beach on South Benson Road. Wristbands will be available to ride the attractions all evening, and the event will also feature carnival games and food from Chilibomb, a new restaurant on Black Rock Turnpike.
8 p.m.: Theatre Fairfield, a Fairfield University-based troupe, will perform its production of The Glass Menagerie at the Quick Center for the Arts, 1073 N. Benson Road. The students will also have shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $12 at the door.
