FAIRFIELD, Conn. A Southport couple were nestled in their bed before dawn Sunday when they were awakened by a huge tree crashing into their bedroom.
The husband said the tree came to rest just inches from his face. He said if their canopy bed hadnt partially broken the trees fall, he and his wife probably would have been killed.
The man, who asked not to be identified, said his wife described the noise as like a freight train. A relative who had been sleeping in another upstairs bedroom thought it was an explosion. No one was injured.
A crane operator preparing to lift the tree off the caved-in upper-story of the home said just the trunk itself probably weighed 5 tons.
The tree was one of the trunks of an ancient copper beach. The homeowner said he was told by an arborist that the tree probably was older than the house, which dates to 1792.
Perched over the front of the house, the mammoth trunk looks like a dinosaur with gray skin, the man said with a chuckle.
The home is located at 15 Main St. in Southport village across from the Fire Station. Until Sunday morning, it had been on the market. But the for-sale sign was removed by workmen preparing to grapple with the huge intruder.
