Southport Farmers Market Offers Taste of Summer This Winter

SOUTHPORT, Conn. — The gardening season may still be months away, but Fairfield residents can have their pick of fresh state-grown veggies at the Winter Farmers Market of Southport.

Tucked on residential street between the Post Road and I-95, the market opens from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday at the Ukrainian American Club, said Diana Lytwyn, who organized the market with her husband, Paul.

The Lytwyns started their own small farm on a private road off Mill Plain Road in the 1990s, buying a hen for their daughter to raise. They now have many and are known for the fresh eggs they bring to the market each week.

“It became a big hit,” she said.

The couple has participated in the Greenfield Hill Farmers Market for about 10 summers and spent two years running an indoor winter market at the Greenfield Hill Grange hall before moving to the more centrally located Ukrainian Club. Paul Lytwyn is a past president of the club.

The small but substantial market offers a variety of homemade and handmade items from flax bread and fresh greens to cheeses, flowers, salsa, granola and jewelry. A typical Saturday usually brings 14 to 16 vendors to the site.

The Lytwyns sell a variety of vegetables, including garlic that Paul Lytwyn hand-sows on land they own in Colebrook. Some of their winter offerings also come from a farm in Litchfield County.

“They’re all locally sourced vegetables,” said Diane Lytwyn, a retired nursing director who also sells antiques.

Organizers say the market is gaining a following, but they would love for the hidden gem to have more customers each week.

“I am convinced that if more people knew about it, we would have more foot traffic,” said Patty Robinson, who sells her handmade Blue Lotus Bracelets at the market.

The Winter Farmers Market of Southport is located at the Ukrainian American Club, 279 King’s Drive in the Southport section of Fairfield. It will be open every Saturday through April 30. For more information on the weekend’s vendors, visit their Facebook page.
