Santa Arrives In Fairfield

Who can bring out thousands of Fairfielders to brave the chill on a frosty Friday night? As the song says, “Must be Santa.” Kids of all ages packed Town Hall Green to kick off the holiday season at the Fairfield Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. The crowd went wild as the man in red rode in on a bright red fire truck.

“It’s great,” said Chris Spearing, with 5-year-old son, Elias Moise, in tow. “It’s not too crowded … it’s a nice night.”

Elias had only one thing on his mind, as evidenced by his headwear: Santa. But the big man wasn’t the only gift-giver around the Green Friday night. Continuing their decades-old tradition, the Kenney family acted as Santa’s helpers. Dad Kevin, mom Janice, and sons Jason and Erick passed out candy canes and other treats to the kids, courtesy of the local unit of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

“It’s a lot of fun to see the looks on their faces when you give [gifts] to them and tell them Santa’s coming,” Kevin said. “I haven’t missed one in 20 years.”

As the lights on the 30-foot tall Christmas tree lit up and Santa began rolling into town, the temperature hovered around 30 degrees. But hot cocoa provided by the Fairfield Youth Council helped warm the crowd. The teens handed out hot drinks to collect donations for their annual Scholarship Fund, braving the cold themselves.

“I’m a little cold in my fingers,” said David Brown, one of the distributors, “But I’ll be okay.”
