Rosh Hashanah Kicks Off

Starting Wednesday at sundown, the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah begins, marking a time of reflection as the Hebrew calendar turns over a new year. Rabbi Mitchell Rocklin at Congregation Ahavath Achim expects a crowd of 100 to 150 people from Fairfield, Easton and Bridgeport at each of his twice-daily services during the High Holidays. But because his is an Orthodox synagogue, he doesn't expect a spike in attendance from a regular weekly service.

"It's a small, friendly and dedicated community," Rocklin says. "We get less of an increase than a typical membership."

Rocklin's service will focus on the opportunity in the new year to put yourself on a better path. "The holiday presents its own theme, so to speak," he says. Rocklin added that he plans to focus on two key points: having the desire to change and having the desire to help others change.

Ahavath Achim will hold its services at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. "We've got open space, if anyone wants to stop by," Rocklin says.
