The Sasquanaug Association and Friends of the Southport Park teamed to arrange for the renovation of the park about a year ago. With some help from the Aspetuck Land Trust and designers Mark Findlay Associates, the two groups added new facilities to the park, which will be unveiled Saturday.
“The goal was to create a park to be enjoyed by all members of the community throughout the year,” the groups said in a statement.
Together, the two organizations raised more than $350,000 to put toward the park’s renovation. The contributions helped to pay for landscape designs, new safety fencing along the park’s boundaries, improved signs throughout the park and more.
The 11-acre park sits on land owned by the Sasquanaug Association. Its main entrance is on Old Post Road, and it is bound by the Post Road to the north and the train tracks to the south.
The park now includes a nearly 700-meter hiking trail that takes walkers over the Mill River Watercourse, with offshoot trails to scenic outlooks. There is also a “natural playground” built near the main entrance, a gathering space with benches and a picnic area.
The park’s builders will hold a Grand Opening celebration Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southport Park. The event will include guided tours, a nature walk led by the Connecticut Audubon Society, geocaching, facepainting and other activities. For more information, visit the Southport Park website.
