Mr. Handyman Lights the Way

Every Christmas, Debra Hendrickson's house is the jewel on her street. As the skies turn gray and darken early, and the threats of snow pile up, hers is the only one consistently illuminated with gentle white lights. But that’s not because Hendrickson and her husband broke out the ladder and did it themselves.

“We've tried to tackle it before, and it's just not pretty,”  Hendrickson said with a slight laugh outside her Fairfield home. That's where Christmas Decor by Mr. Handyman and Roy Hemond come in. When the weather starts to turn cold, Hemond takes on the role of décor installer for the company.

While Hendrickson waits comfortably inside, Hemond tests the lights to make sure everything is in good working order. Every one of Hemond's 49 clients has a set of boxes in a Mr. Handyman storage facility with their rented lights and decorations in it. Hemond has the process down to such a science that for repeat customers he can have a home fully set up before some people can get last year's box of hastily packed lights untangled.

Hemond also wires the lighting for the annual Knights of Columbus display in New Haven. While Hemond can handle any number of repair jobs, he enjoys being the lights guy for Mr. Handyman. “I like doing this, especially when you're done and the owner comes home and sees their house all lit up, said Hemond.

Hendrickson said seeing her house stand out really brightens her day. “Even if you've had a bad day, when you turn the corner and you can see the lights, it just makes you smile. I love it,” said Hendrickson.
