May Lauretano, 99, Fairfield Antiques Collector

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Mafalda "May" Giacomelli Lauretano of Fairfield died April 28. She was 99. 

She was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Barbara, Ancona, Italy, to Eugenio and Marietta Rossini Giacomelli. Lauretano immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island at the age of 2. She enjoyed the shoreline of New Haven as a young adult with her sisters and cousins, working at her uncle's restaurant in Savin Rock. 

Formerly of Manchester and New Haven, Lauretano graduated from Commercial High School in 1932. She worked in a gift shop when she met her husband, Michael, who was a Yale University art student. They were married in June 1939. 

She enjoyed collecting antiques and loved music, singing and playing and learning new songs on the piano.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Anthony Lauretano; and two sisters, Pierina Milici and Louise Halpin. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Lauretano, of Bridgeport; a son, Michael J. Lauretano, of Bethel; a sister, Iole Guala; and a granddaughter. 

A private burial will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Trumbull. There will be no calling hours. Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
