To the editor: I am writing in support of my friend, Tony Hwang, the incumbent state representative for the 134th District and the Republican candidate to succeed John McKinney as the state senator for the 28th District serving Fairfield, Newtown, Easton, and portions of Westport and Weston. Although I am a lifelong Democrat, I am writing on his behalf because I believe that people who are in public service for the right reasons should be supported. Tony is neither an ideologue nor an egoist. I know this because I have spent a lot of time talking to him about politics and public policy. He simply wants to try and make things better for all of us. Tony is passionate, intelligent and engaged in the problems of our state. He believes that our country should operate on basic principles; that individual initiative is the basis for our wealth, that each individual should be assured an equal chance to achieve success, and that those who are less fortunate need help not lectures. This understanding is demonstrated in his voting record and his accomplishments. He has consistently opposed excessive business regulations but has also voted to fund legal aid services for the less fortunate who need representation. Tony does not believe that money equals speech and has been a champion of public financing and full disclosure laws in the state. Tony has a daughter and has always supported a woman's right to privacy and choice. When Tony found out that our military servicemen do not carry magazines carrying more than 15 rounds he supported that limitation in the gun control legislation. Tony make policy decisions based on facts not ideology. He is a pragmatist in the best sense of the term -- a policy adopted to fix a problem should be continued if it is effective and a policy that does not fix the problem should be changed. He understands that both equal opportunity and excellence are vital to the growth of Connecticut. He is relentless in his pursuit of eliminating wasteful spending; even to the point of criticizing the generous and expensive medical insurance plan enjoyed by members of our Legislature. Clearly, he is not worried about being popular with the career politicians in Hartford. Tony is dedicated to his family, his church, and the people of the State of Connecticut. Please help to keep him in Hartford and vote for Tony Hwang. Our community will be better for it. Very truly yours, Jack Slane
