Letter: Fairfielder Supports GOP in District 8

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Robert LaRosa is a Fairfield resident. He submitted this letter in support of the Republican slate for the Representative Town Meeting in District 8.

Letter to the Editor,

In 2008, a resolution came before the Representative Town Meeting, part of which called for a municipal pool complex to be built on the site of the Turner Army Reserve Center in Fairfield’s District 8. Residents in large numbers opposed the resolution, arguing that a residential neighborhood could not support any recreational facility of that scale at that site.

The RTM as a body recognized the validity of that argument and ultimately approved a more appropriate recreational use for the site that would not negatively impact surrounding neighbors. Ironically, Bob Greenberger (D) and Lisa Winjum (D), who were District 8 representatives on the RTM at the time, were in full support of the original resolution and dismissed opposition to “NIMBY” short-sightedness. Their position on this issue contributed in large measure to their defeat in the election of 2009.

Since that time, Bob has written for The Patch and taken every opportunity to snipe at the Republican controlled RTM. Ironically, he seems to have taken more time to make his voice known now that he is out of office than he did when he was in office. No one in my neighborhood can recall meeting him or discussing any issues with him or Lisa. Hence, they were defeated.

Now, Mr. Greenberger and Ms. Winjum are looking to get back on the RTM. Through his campaign literature, Mr. Greenberger would like to rewrite history and throw in his own spin for good measure. He implies that the representatives who replaced him two years ago have acted only on behalf of the interests of fringe groups. Apparently, neighborhoods and the people you are supposed to represent are now considered “fringe groups.”

After three years, Mr. Greenberger still does not get it. Fairfield’s residents should not be asked to sacrifice the quiet enjoyment of their homes and their neighborhoods for the sake of what Greenberger and some others may view as larger considerations. And, given the educational backgrounds and work experiences of our neighbors, there are valid reasons why they were voted out.

Do not pretend to know what is best for us as if we are unable to grasp the concept of the common good. I know I very rarely feel that a politician is the “smartest guy in the room.” Representatives who to do not advocate on behalf of their constituents are representatives in name only. Neither Bob nor Lisa represented their constituents well. There is no reason to think that they have been rehabilitated and deserve another chance.
