FAIRFIELD, Conn. The following letter was submitted by the Rev. Nicholas T. Porter in support of Representative Town Meeting member and candidate Michael Herley. Porter is rector of Trinity Church in Southport.
Most days, I begin my morning with prayers in the chapel of Trinity Church in Southport. Last week as I returned home, I saw a well-dressed man taking pictures and examining the crosswalk and four-way intersection of Center Street and Pequot Avenue. I wondered if it was a policeman or a town official inspecting the recent improvements to pedestrian and traffic safety there. It was not. It was our representative for District 1, Michael Herley, who was making time before commuting to work to see for himself the completed work. Later that day, he sent out an email with photographs and a report to the various concerned parties.
Michael Herleys commitment to his constituency is the kind of diligence and accountability that we need in Fairfield town government. Through his involvement in the Trinity Parish Nursery School, he became aware of the various, real safety concerns along what is now a very busy Center Street in Southport. Carefully and responsibly, he met with the residents and worked with institutions in the area to raise the issues before the public, the police and the town selectmen.
The process, that he initiated and led, resulted in the needed repaving of much of Center Street and several improvements at the intersection of Center Street and Pequot Avenue.
Trinity Church and Trinity Parish Nursery School are grateful to Michael for his leadership and to the town for it responsiveness. Other issues in our district remain, and we have confidence that Michael Herley will help us to resolve them.
