FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? The following letter is from Laura Incerto, who ran as an Independent in the most recent municipal election.
There is a lot to be said for those who are willing to go out on a limb. Thats just what many taxpayers in Fairfield did by supporting the Independent Party in the recent local election. I personally ran for the Board of Finance seat alongside Hugh F. Dolan (First Selectman) and Deanna R. Polizzo (Selectman) and many others who wanted to see change in how our local government conducts business. Although our results werent at the winning level, they are not to be underplayed. Its clear that taxpayers are taking a stand and wanting another solution to the same old politics. I want to personally thank those of you who chose to vote for me and the Independent Party. It sent a clear message that our work has only just begun. We have many issues that we will continue to work with our local officials on to find consensus.
Many of us have chosen to work with a recently formed group of concerned taxpayers called Fairfield for Good Government. This growing and vibrant group of Republicans, Democrats and Independents has been meeting on a regular basis at the local library with the focus on enacting good, constructive change in how our local government examines town and education budgets, support for employee contracts based on employee contributions, change in teacher contracts to increase teacher-pupil ratios, recommendations for charter changes and, most importantly, how to avoid future tax expenditures for inside deals such as the one made with the new Fairfield Metro Train Station. The Independent Party is not an outsiders approach to change but an alternative to the way things have always been done. If youre satisfied with your taxes being raised every year, with an overspending mentality, and with not being part of the process, then joining the Fairfield for Good Government Group is not for you.
But if you want to be an active participant in your future and how your tax dollars are managed, then you will want to know more about this group of concerned and action-oriented taxpayers and consider attending our meetings.
I personally love living in Fairfield and am willing to do my part to make it an affordable place to live.
