Julia McGovern, 79, of Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Julia Santolupo McGovern of Fairfield died May 25. She was 79.

She was born July 8, 1932, in Fairfield to Pellegrino and Julia Millo Santolupo. Married to the late Albert F. McGovern Sr., she lived most of her life in Bridgeport, before returning to Fairfield in 1984.

McGovern graduated from Harding High School in 1950. She was an employee of Fairfield University for 34 years before retiring in 2008. She spent many years working in their development office. 

A devout Catholic, McGovern was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and the Gaelic American Club. She loved to travel, spend time with her family and go to the opera.

McGovern is survived by three sons, Albert F. (Mary Jo) McGovern Jr., of Naperville, Ill., Gregory A. (Janie) McGovern, of Heber, Utah, and Gary E. (Jane) McGovern, of Scituate, Mass.; two daughters, Liz (Judy Eckert) McGovern and Diane M. Kose, both of Bridgeport; a sister, Helen Valovcin, of Framingham, Mass.; two brothers, John (Marianne) Santolupo, of Fairfield, and Arthur Santolupo, of Bridgeport; and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert; and five siblings, Dominic Santolupo, Carmella Zega, August Santolupo, Olga Chaco and Gloria Liberto. 

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Lesko and Polke Funeral Home in Fairfield Center. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Fairfield. Burial will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in Stratford.
