Gurukul Students Team Up To Help Fairfield's Operation Hope

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield and New Haven County students in a Gurukul class taught by Shilpa Bolaki Ahuja teamed with Stop & Shop of Westport to bring holiday joy to needy families in the area.

Students filled bags donated by Stop & Shop and manager David Faccin with food to feed four people. The bags include toiletries, gloves and hats and were given to Operation Hope, which is based in Fairfield.

Students who made the bags were Anoushka Ahuja, Armaan Ajoomal, Vedanta and Vidwaan Behera, Keertana Chagari, Kaveen and Krish Dodani, Arnav Jhangiani, Muskan and Sanjna Kewalramani, Jais and Nia Lunn, Vidhi, Yukta and Simran Murjani; Riya Punjabi, Dinu and Sarina Ramchandani, Neesha and Kunal Ramchandani and Siddharth Suneja.

Donna Schmidt, volunteer program manager for Operation Hope, accepted all the bags that the kids packed and gave the children a tour of the pantry. She also explained to the children the mission of Operation Hope and the community it serves with food and shelter.

Parents Ashu Gehani and Punita Ramchandani and Kusum Ramchandani helped organize the drive. The idea was spurred by Shrilekha Tolat, a guest speaker at Ahuja's Gurukul class, whose speech was in the form of a story from the great epic legend of Ramayana. She tied that into the modern times of how people need to engage in random acts of kindness in day to day life.

The children collectively decided to raise funds for the shopping trip, with some children foregoing allowances and emptying their piggy banks to assist the cause.

Gurukul helps students dispel the darkness of the mind and leads to total emancipation of the individual and society at large. The Gurukul system traces its roots back 10,000 years to the time of ancient civilization and is dedicated to the highest ideals of all-round human development.
